Scary Times

I fear McCarthyism has come to the U.S. once again, I also believe that the conservative right wish to set up Authoritarian rule. No other ideology is relevant to them than Christian Conservatism or better yet White Christian Capitalism. I am overcome by the rights paranoia, these are scary times my brothers and sisters, scary times. With the birthers, truthers, glenn beck mixing truth with slight fabrications-just enough to keep his followers freaked out, the left sided media cherry picking stories and skipping over anything that is defaming to the left. Scary times.

General Views of Social Liberals

General Views of social liberals today
In general, contemporary social liberals support:
An economy consisting mainly of private enterprise, but with government owned or subsidized programs of education, healthcare, childcare, etc for all citizens.
Regulatory bodies over private enterprise in the interests of workers, consumers and fair competition.
Free Trade (not supporting a laissez-faire free market)
A basic system of
social security.
A moderate level of taxation.
Environmental protection laws (although not always to the extent advocated by the green movement)
Fairly open stances toward immigration and multiculturalism stemming from social liberal tendency to be civic nationalists (as opposed to ethnic nationalists).
A secular and progressive social policy, including support for comprehensive sex education, gay and lesbian rights, universal healthcare, abortion rights, stem cell research, abolition of capitol punishment and (sometimes) euthanasia.
A belief in the existence of victimless crimes (e.g. drug use and prostitution) and many social liberals call for the decriminalization or outright legalization of these practices.
Decentralized decision-making.
Internationalism (Oppose extreme and aggressive nationalism)
A foreign policy supporting the promotion of democracy, and the protection of human rights.
Social liberals also support social rights, civil rights and civil liberties.

The Last Can

Global warming has come, the oceans have risen, the world has changed, massive earthquakes, volcano eruptions on a a scale not seen since Pompeii. A family scavenges for food, searching the old stores and their empty shelves, searching for anything, a morsel, old Twinkies, a gummy bear, anything. Then in the dim light that cracks through the broken window, a can, the last can in the store, the last can perhaps for miles or even a span of state lines. Then the family notices something, movement in the light, it's a person, a person with sandals, cargo shorts, a grateful dead t-shirt, a smile. Oh my, it's a liberal. The man notices the family, then eyes the can, the family eyes the can, awkward moment ensues, the man takes the can, walks over to the family and asks if they wish to share the can of chef-boy-ar-dee with him. They all agree to be civil and enjoy each other's company for the evening. A friend has been made in this new harsh world.
Now let's change the man in the store.
Then the family notices something, movement in the light, it's a person, a person with loafers, black socks, dark blue jeans, a button down long sleeve shirt, an angry frown. Oh my, it's a conservative. the man notices the family, then eyes the can, the family eyes the can, awkward moment ensues, the man grabs a brick throws it at the family, grabs the can, yells at the family to get lost because this can is for him and his family and there is not enough for everyone. The family leaves in fear and sorrow fills their evening.
Now let's change the man in the store again.
Then the family notices something, movement in the light, it's a person, a person with sneakers, faded jeans, a shirt that says " the constitution" somewhere on it, a snide sort of sneer. Oh my, it's a libertarian. The man notices the family, then eyes the can, the family eyes the can, awkward moment ensues, the man grabs his side-arm and shoots the family dead. The End!

I hope you all learned something from this blog today.
